The Truth About Fats: Good Fats vs. Bad Fats

Saturday, April 7th, 2012

By Sherri Turner

At one time, all types of fats were said to be dangerous to your health. It was believed that they all
contributed to different diseases, including heart disease, diabetes, and even cancer. With years of
research, it is now known that some fats are, in fact, crucial to your overall health and can actually
reduce the risks for some diseases. However, how can you tell the good fats from the bad fats?

The Good Fats

Monounsaturated fats, which can be found in peanuts, avocados, and canola oil, are considered to
be good fats. They help lower LDL cholesterol, which is considered to be bad for your health, while
maintaining healthy levels of HDL cholesterol, which is considered to be good for your health. These
fats help keep your arteries cleared.

Polyunsaturated fats, which are commonly found in such foods as cold-water fish, walnuts, and
flaxseeds, are also considered to be good fats. For those that have Omega-3 fatty acids in their diets, the
chances for diabetes and heart disease are lessened. Omega-3 fatty acids may also help with treating or
preventing asthma, depression, arthritis, and colitis.

The Bad Fats

Saturated fats, which can be mostly found in animal products like meats, eggs, and dairy, raise the total
cholesterol level. They also increase the LDL cholesterol level.

However, it is the manmade trans fats that are the most dangerous because they can clog arteries, affect
your nervous system, and make you gain weight. Trans fats are most commonly found in processed
foods as a result of hydrogenation, which is used to help prolong shelf life.

How to Lose Weight: Tips for Reducing or Eliminating Bad Fats

The key to losing weight is to develop a diet plan that encourages healthy eating and regular exercise.
When avoiding saturated and trans fats on a diet plan, it is important that you learn ways to substitute
them in your diet or eliminate them altogether. Here are just a few simple examples for losing weight
using healthy eating:

Use olive oil or canola oil instead of butter, shortening, or lard
Remove processed foods from your diet plan, which will also save you money
Switch from whole milk to skim milk
Eat fatty red meats less often
Remove the fat from pork or the skin from chicken when eating
Avoid deep-fried foods and breaded meats

No matter what you are eating, you have to remember to eat moderate amounts. Even if you are eating
healthy, eating too much can still result in weight gain. By eating smaller, frequent meals, you will feel
more full throughout the day and potentially avoid binging.

Along with healthy eating, it is also important that you partake in physical activities. By finding
physical weight loss solutions that you enjoy doing, you will be able to keep fit while losing and
maintaining your ideal weight.

While fats are needed to regulate your body and promote your overall well-being, knowing the
differences between good and bad fats and how to use them in your diet plan will help you achieve
your weight loss goals.

Diets That Work – The Brazilian Diet

Friday, April 6th, 2012

By Aidan Caleb

There are so many diets that work. You just have to make a little effort on researching for the best one that will work best for you. To give you one type of diet that was able to give positive results to many, please see the information below, on how to have a 14 day diet program, The Brazilian way.

Step By Step Guide For A 14 Day diet that work, The Brazilian Way.

Have you ever heard of a 14 day diet program that is said to lower down your body’s weight in just two weeks? Actually, there are different kinds of 14 day diets that work, which you can find online, but the most popular one would be the Brazilian 14 day diet plan.

What are the different steps to complete a 14 day diet Brazilian plan?

In order to do the diet perfectly, you will of course follow a specific menu each day, for two weeks. Here are the details:

1st day – Three meals a day consisting of an egg, unsweetened coffee, and an apple.

2nd day – You are free to use the same menu for day 1.

3rd day – Two eggs for breakfast, beef with spinach for lunch, and an apple for diner.

4th day – One egg in the morning, steamed fish for lunch, and two eggs with unsweetened coffee in the evening.

5th day – an egg with unsweetened coffee in the morning, two eggs with tomato for lunch, and steamed fish with veggies in the evening.

6th day – an egg with a cup of unsweetened coffee in the morning, beef with cucumber for lunch, and skinless chicken with a cup of semi sweetened coffee for diner.

7th day – coffee with 1 tspn of honey and an egg for the morning, chicken with veggies for lunch, and chicken with veggies for diner with an apple and unsweetened coffee.

Note: always boil meat to achieve good results for your 14 day diet program. Sweeten your coffee with pure honey only, not with any kind of sweetener. Repeat the same menu for the second week.

This diet may or may not work for you. Like what I said in the past blogs, no unique diet can work for all. However, this diet became popular due to the positive results it was able to give to the majority of people who have tried it. This diet worked on them, so it might work for you as well.

Alkaline Diet Is the New Diet to Lose Weight Naturally and Stay Healthy

Wednesday, April 4th, 2012

By Sherri Turner

The alkaline diet plan is a diet that focuses mainly on keeping the blood slightly alkaline based on the pH level. The diet plan mainly consists of nuts, roots, fresh fruits, and vegetables to help reduce the intake of acidic foods consumed that play host to a variety of problems.

According to the theories attached to this diet, because of the increased consumption of high acid foods, such as meats, processed food, salty foods, sweets, and white breads, people are more susceptible to illnesses and becoming overweight. If bodily fluids are high in acidity, the body will try to neutralize it by taking alkaline salts from bone and tissue. The body will also create fat to bind the acidic residue and keep it stored in other parts of the body away from the vital organs.

How Does an Alkaline Diet Plan Help?

The diet plan is designed to help restore the acid/alkaline balance in your body by regulating what and how much you eat. It is designed to help alkalize the blood to prevent fat from forming and essential alkaline salts from being taken from the bone and tissue. The reported benefits include:

Weight loss Increased stamina Increased strength Stronger immune system

Using an Acid Alkaline Diet as a Weight Loss Solution

The diet plan is not necessarily aimed at losing large amounts of weight quickly. It is instead designed to help you find the ideal acid/alkaline balance for healthier living in general. The diet generally consists of 80% of alkaline foods and 20% of acid foods, and there is often less emphasis on calories.

Some of the foods you can freely eat with this diet may include:

Brussels sprouts Comfreys Cauliflowers Zucchinis Celerys Wheat grass Carrots Turnips Tomatoes Limes White beans Almonds Caraway seeds Coconut water

Some foods that you can consume sparingly may include:

Fresh water fish Brown rice Pineapples Sunflower oil Walnuts

Just like with any diet, there are also foods that should be avoided. Such foods may include:

Pork
Artificial sweeteners
White bread
Liquor
Processed foods

If you want to lose weight with this diet, or any other of many weight loss solutions, it is important that you make other changes to your lifestyle to help make it ideal. It is not only enough to adjust your eating habits, but by introducing regular exercise to your diet plan, you will improve weight loss. You will also naturally increase your stamina, strength, and help build your immune system. Before you use the acid alkaline diet to lose weight, be sure to speak with your doctor to address any concerns.

With the necessary lifestyle changes, an alkaline diet plan can help you live healthier and feel the benefits. Just remember that diet plans also require exercise and dedication to the routine to achieve the best results.

Protein Diet – What Is The Right Protein Diet?

Wednesday, April 4th, 2012

By Sherri Turner

Many are asking on what could be the best protein diet to have. While protein diet is good in order to achieve weight loss, not all diets for limited to no protein at all, may work for you. You have to consider a professional advice on this, in order to choose the right protein diet for you.

A protein diet is typically for building muscle. When you are in a program to build up your body muscle, it is not enough to focus on the kind of exercise routines to make in order to increase and tone the size of your body mass. You must also put an equal amount of importance to the kind of food to eat after working out. Knowing the different food for muscle will help you achieve the kind of shape you are longing to have in the soonest possible time.

So what are best protein diet foods for muscle build up?

Ideally, people who want to increase their muscle’s size must make sure to eat foods that are high in protein. If you are not sure about the best food for muscle growth, take a look at the bullet points I have for you below that will show you the best protein foods for building muscle.

List of the best protein diet food for muscle

Low fat dairy products – these are the kind of food that you can easily purchase from any convenience store. Examples to this would be yogurt, milk and cheese. But if you will ask your nutritionist, they will normally recommend yogurt because aside from it having the enough amount of protein, you will also benefit from having a healthy digestive system because it contains live microorganisms that aids good digestion. Red meat – a good meal for bodybuilders will always include red and lean meat.

However, since this kind of meat is also full of unhealthy fats, make sure to have red meat at least once every week only. Beans – red beans in particular is one of the best sources of protein. You can either have it as a side dish or an ingredient for your garden salad. Beans are also good for a healthy digestion. If you need to have any source of meat in your diet, instead of beef, you can replace it with chicken or even turkey. They also contain a good amount of protein, and yet they can be part of your everyday meal since they don’t contain too much fat. Fish – the most recommended meat and the best food for protein. It does not have too much fat, but it contains high amount of protein plus omega 3 which is very good if you want to have a healthy body.

Eggs – this is the best food for muscle building because it contains the highest amount of protein among all protein foods. However, you have to limit yourself to 3 eggs every week based on a nutritionist’s recommendation.

There you go these are the best recommendations I can share with you if you are building up your body mass. Remember, bodybuilding will not always focus on the exercise alone but to the kind of protein diet that you have as well. Although there are supplements that you can take in order to get the kind of results that you want faster, it will always be best if you do it the natural way.

Child Obesity: How to Help Your Child Lose Weight

Monday, April 2nd, 2012

Copyright © 2012 Sherri Turner

Because many aspects of today’s society are designed to be more convenient, maintaining a healthy weight can be difficult. For children, this is especially true as more are becoming focused on home entertainment and fast foods instead of exercising and eating healthy. However, as a parent, it is important that you help your child maintain a healthy lifestyle to prevent child obesity.

6 Tips for Preventing Childhood Obesity

Because child obesity is a serious health concern, with more and more children being diagnosed with adult health conditions, here are some tips for possible child obesity weight loss solutions:

1. Lead by example. Because children learn by observing their parents, the first step to changing your child’s eating habits is by changing your own. By working with your child to achieve similar goals, you will help them see overcoming childhood obesity as being a positive experience.

2. Set realistic goals to overcome childhood obesity. As always, it is better to set smaller goals that are easier to achieve to build confidence and encourage the child to overcome child obesity. Remember that your child is still growing and that it is actually better to have your child maintain weight than lose it. This is because if the child does not gain more weight while growing, he/she will become thinner more naturally.

3. Introduce the health program to the entire household. When helping a child lose weight, never single him/her out. Instead, make sure that everyone in the household follows the same routine to make it easier for the child to resist temptation and form a support group. Even family members that do not need to lose weight will still benefit from healthy lifestyle changes.

4. Encourage a diet of healthy food. Choosing low-fat foods and eating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables will help your child be healthy and lose weight. It is important that you feed your child foods that will help make him/her feel feel fuller throughout the day while actually eating less. Making sure that your child feels full will prevent binging. However, also keep in mind that unhealthy foods can still be eaten in small doses to help prevent your child from binging out of spite.

5. Choose physical activities that are fun. Each child will have different preferences for the types of activities they most enjoy. By finding those that the child enjoys, you will make it easier to form a regular exercise routine that will be maintained.

6. Offer rewards. Some children work better when they have something immediate to strive for. For example, if you set a specific goal for your child to avoid drinking soda for a week and they succeed, then you can reward him/her with a little gift. However, avoid using food as rewards.

Just remember that before you experiment with different childhood obesity weight loss solutions, it is crucial that you consult with your family doctor. In doing so, you will be able to design a diet plan that is specific to your child’s weight loss needs.

Top Weight Loss Tips For Summer 2012

Friday, March 9th, 2012

By Liam Thompson

During the winter months it’s a lot easier to cover up those extra few pounds by wearing a big baggy jumper or winter coat, but as we get closer to spring its going to be harder to keep the wobbly bits covered up, especially when your friends are all wearing the latest skimpy jeans and tops.

So what can you do about it to make sure that you look your very best for summer 2012?

Ask yourself why you have been putting on weight over the winter months. If you can identify this then you should find it a lot easier to lose.

Look at the types of food that you are eating to see if there is anything that may be causing you to gain weight. This could be anything from lots of bread, pasta, fried foods and even sugary drinks and alcohol. Cutting these out could give you an energy boost as well as helping you to trim up a bit. If you are not exercising ask yourself why not. Maybe this is because you lack motivation or maybe you just haven’t found something that you enjoy. Believe it or not most people hate the thought of stepping into a gym, especially with all the intimidating machines and bodybuilders. If you can find a type of exercise that you enjoy and that is fun then you should have no problem motivating yourself to do more of it.

Drink more water. Most people who are trying to lose weight don’t drink enough water and in a perpetual state of dehydration. If you are not hydrated enough there is no way your body is going to burn body fat. Get more sleep. People who don’t get 8 hours a night sleep are going to struggle because lack of sleep elevates the stress hormone cortisol, which basically switches off fat burning and forces our bodies to use muscle for fuel.

The same thing happens when we have stressful lives or jobs.

Get more sunshine. Hard to do in the winter but the good news is that getting outside in the sun more in the spring and summer can top up our vitamin D levels and give us an extra boost when it comes to fat loss.

Get off the sofa and away from the TV or your Laptop and just get moving more. Your body is designed to move not sit on a sofa for hours on end watching mind numbing programs (unless it’s fitness TV)

There are a multitude of things you can do to start getting yourself into shape for the summer and they are not hard. Each point above will bring you a little bit closer to your weight loss goal but if you add them all together you should be making some really great strides to getting your perfect beach body for summer 2012.

Remember that you only need to do a little bit every day and make it consistent. If you start now and look to drop around a pound a week over the next 4 months then you will have lost 16 lbs by July (and it will stay off). This is much easier than panicking in June and trying to lose it all in one month, which is a recipe for yo-yoing.

Easy Weight Loss Tips to Jump-Start Your Weight Loss

Saturday, February 4th, 2012

By Gladys Alvarez

Here we are again to talk to you about losing weight.

We have foods we call “comfort foods”, such as starchy carbs which make us drowsy or relaxed, while foods that are high in protein, can make us mentally alert when we are feeling tired, like fish, poultry and dairy products.

If we are overweight and we want to lose those extra pounds, we must question ourselves and find where our weak points are. Very possibly our overweight is due to excessive negative carbs, low protein and little, if any physical activity!

If we are serious about losing that weight, then we must take charge of our life, (it depends on our actions) and we must ask our self: Where is it that we are tempted to overeat or eat the wrong things? Is it at the movies, where we can eat that popcorn loaded with “butter”? Those Nachos with cheese?

At home in front of our TV? Or perhaps it is at work, where every day someone brings dough-nuts or perhaps a cake for a Birthday? Maybe you buy yours snacks from that Vending Machine with all those goodies.

When you have identified your weak spots, avoid them by taking with you a healthy fruit snack instead, even a low fat pretzel will work. Watch those fruits that are high in sugar content. Try snacks with nuts that are low in fat and sodium.

Avoid those fast food places where the food is loaded with saturated fats, sugars and carbs, while at the same time being very low in fiber and I wonder if you really want to know about the use of cattle body parts to make those hamburger patties. I could tell you about them and gross you out, but take my word for it, avoid those fast food burgers like you would avoid the plague! And if you have children, please don’t give it to them.

We as parents sometimes think that because our children are young, it’s OK to feed them whatever garbage they ask for. That is where we are supposed to come in to teach them about eating healthy foods.

In my experience I have seen parents having to take their children for a Lab-work only to find out that all those French fries, fried ripe bananas and other fried foods their children are eating, have caused them to develop very high cholesterol. Remember, just because they are young doesn’t mean they are immune to illness just as we are. Just because they are fat, does not mean they are healthy!

Let us set an example, pack up healthy lunches, not processed meats, such as ham, bologna etc. Processed foods are loaded with fats, sodium and nitrite to enhance color and extend the shelve life and that includes our beloved hot dogs.

Five Weight Loss Tips That Work for Women

Saturday, February 4th, 2012

By Gladys B Alvarez

We all know that if today we are at a svelte 110 Lbs, and (we think) that tomorrow we are weighing 140/150 Lbs, it was not because we were making the right food or nutrution choices. Here are some tips that should help you along that road to losing the extra pounds, provided you are really serious about doing so:

Tip # 1

Ladies, for some time now I have been encouraging you to pay careful attention to your health and the health of those who surround you. I have been educating you to the fact that any form of exercise, improves your health. That reading the labels on the packaging of the foods you are purchasing is very important. We have become a nation of obese people. We think that since we have plenty, we are obligated to consume it all, and we are doing an excellent job of it.

Tip # 2

Before you exercise, if you do it in the morning have a light snack, so you don’t run out of energy in the process. In the interim, if you do so in the afternoon, have yourself a small carb snack, one or two hours in advance. To help your muscles recoup after your exercise, have a combination of protein and carbs, but make that a small portion and above all, do not forget to drink a lot of water. Some of us claim not to like water, and do not drink and much water as we need; but there are natural enhancers to flavor your water, I like a few drops of lemon, if you go for commercial enhancers, read the labels for sugar content.

Tip # 3

Remember that with any luck, with the advance in scientific findings, the chances of our living to a ripe old age keep improving, but… we do not want to get old in an unhealthy body or mind. Among some of the advantages, is the fact that we can remain independent and not become a burden to anyone, to that respect, we need to keep both mind and body, active. Research says that Alzheimers can be caused by inheritance or it could be caused by the inactivity of our brains. We pray for a long life, so we can see our children and grandchildren grow, in that case, the best chance we have of getting there, is by being healthy, and by taking care of ourselves today.

Tip # 4

To those of you who have children, take a good look at them, don’t be blind to the fact that they may be overweight, it’s bad enough that school food is not exactly healthy, let us not contribute to that fact by feeding our kids processed foods, cereals and snacks full of sugar, and sandwiches with preserved meats that are loaded with chemicals. Researches claim that just one serving a day of any of the preserved meats that our children ingest, increases their chances toward developing, at a later point, any number of diseases that they should not acquire otherwise and could do very well without.

Tip # 5

Consequently, let us not be enablers, by buying them all the wrong treats and foods just because they want them; if we do that, we are also predisposing them to becoming diabetics or morbidly obese, and what about choking the heart with all that surrounding fat! There is hardly an internal organ that does not suffer when we are overweight or heavy. And last but not least, let us not forget the taunting our children undergo from the other children in school, the name calling, the humiliating feeling they get because they are heavy! Our kids are our most precious commodity; let us take good care of them! Good luck!

Top Tips On Why Weight Loss Doesn’t Have To Be Hard

Thursday, January 26th, 2012

By Stavros Georgiadis

Sometimes it seems like weight loss is beyond what we think we can do. So many people start off with a great attitude and a fully motivated spirit, but then give up after just a few workouts. Some people are successful at weight loss. How do they take it off and not gain it back? What is their secret to success?

In order to effectively drop pounds, you must first understand your goals. What exactly are you trying to accomplish through weight loss? Are you looking to be a smaller size in clothing? Is there a particular weight goal that you have in mind? Is a healthy body your goal?

It is crucial to write down your weight loss from week to week. Write down everything you take in on a daily basis, even little tastes. You gain an added sense of accountability when you write down what you’ve eaten. When you see it all in black and white, you may be motivated to choose the healthier options that move you towards success.

Eat small amounts of healthy food frequently to avoid becoming overly hungry and grabbing anything at hand. Plan your meals in advance and take them with you if you are busy. It is a good idea to bring a lunch with you from home. Homemade food usually has fewer calories and less fat than what you would eat at a fast food joint or restaurant.

If losing weight is really important to you, then you need to focus on both diet and activity. To maintain your motivation level, you need to select physical activities that you enjoy doing as part of your exercise plan. Here are some great options: Take a dance class! Join a sports team! Join a hiking club! Get into power walking! Swim or jog with a friend! Use your imagination and you’ll easily discover ways to incorporate regular workouts into your weight loss plan.

You can avoid eating junk by not keeping it around. It is impossible to eat junk food if you don’t keep it in your home. You should have your home filled with healthy food instead. Keep healthy snacks on hand – fresh fruit, crunchy celery or carrot sticks, anything that appeals to you and is good for your health. Do not buy any junk food that you might overindulge in. If it’s inconvenient to get your hands on a certain kind of food, then you are more likely to eat something else that is healthier for you.

Have your friends give you support any way they can. Assistance from friends can be a great motivator for you while you work on your weight loss goals. You may even find some people willing to make healthy lifestyle changes with you! If you’re held responsible by someone, it helps you to not give up when you’re feeling like you can’t go on. If it’s encouragement you need, call a friend. A good friend will be able to give you the psychological support you need to stick to your weight loss plan.
