Your Weight Loss Journey and Daily Priorities Can Be Overwhelming

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

Do you ever wake up and know that today if going to be a busy one? Today is that day. I woke up and felt very flustered. I have so much to do and so little time. Sometimes I don’t like keeping track of everything I have to do because it is so real – on paper and all, so visual to see what a busy day I have. I do not do well when every minute from dawn to dusk is filled with lots tasks and activities. Even if it has fun stuff on it!

That’s okay though. This is how am will get through my day…happily, feeling successful. It is all about priorities. Get yourself a few pieces of paper. Take all the things that have to be done and write one long list. Take the activities that are time bound and put them in their time slot on your calendar. For instance, I have a 1230 run and a 1:30 lake swim. Both are with someone else so that time cannot be changed. I have a soccer game and party with my son at 6pm. Everything else on the list has flexibility.

Take the list with everything that you want to accomplish today and write it out. This is a very short exercise and will save you much time and heartache in the long run. You will thank me at the end of the day. Mark down on a new list everything that can wait until tomorrow. Scratch it off your list. Next make a new list that are the nice to do tasks that could be done today if you have time but isn’t vital for today’s list.

Most importantly now are the few items that are left on today’s list. Take the first 3 tasks that have to be done, bar none. Put them on an index card. You still have your list of things that have to be done today. The reason that I ask you to put them on different lists which are on different papers is so that you do not see a whole list of things to do that are overwhelming when seen as one gigantic list.

When you are done the top three items on the index go back to the ‘Have To Do ‘ list and pick one more item and add it to the index card. Do the task and then go back for one more. Only add one at a time. When you do it like this, you can see how much you are accomplishing. You will end up feeling great about your day versus frustrated and defeated.

This is so tied to your weight loss journey. When you are frustrated and overwhelmed the chances of nervous eating of junk food increases significantly. Stay organized and be successful in your day and have a great weight loss journey, releasing that excess fat instead making more!

Sleep and Weight Loss – Are You Sabotaging Yourself By Going to Bed Late?

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

One late night can lead to another and another. When you have one late night you can usually function ‘ok’. The following day is when it can catch up to you. But what about lack of sleep and weight loss?

If that is followed by another late night even if you get 7 hours sleep you will feel terrible. If that in turn is followed by another late night again with 7-8 hours sleep you will continue to feel terrible. And the cycle continues.

Research shows that a deprivation of sleep can cause fuzziness of thought, poor decision making skills, disruption of stable emotions, lack of physical strength and increased desire for food.

It really isn’t about the amount of sleep you get, it is when you sleep. Think about you own life. When you get to bed too late especially for a few days in a row, how does that make you feel? It has to do with the REM sleep. REM sleep is when you dream, when your body is being rested. It is the recovery stage, and restorative healing of our body and mind. REM sleep happens with the bio rhythm of your internal clock. You body is meant to be asleep at certain periods during the 24 hour clock. That means night that it is meant to sleep.

When we go to bed early and arise early this is the way your body gets the best recovery period. The old saying says “Early to bed. Early to rise. Makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.” There is now truer saying. It will do you well this follow this advice.

I know in my own life when I go to bed later I don’t feel refreshed in the morning, even when I have had my 7-8 hours sleep. Research shows that adult human beings need 7-10 hours of sleep. We all differ somewhat, some needing more or less sleep than others. You will find people that deprive themselves of sleep during the week. If you ask further you will find these same people make up for loss of sleep on the weekends. This is better than the continuation of deprivation but not as good as getting the proper amount on a nightly basis.

Your decision making skills is what is concerning when it comes to weight loss. You don’t make good choices when you are physically drained. Let’s face it, sleep and weight loss do not go together very well.

“Fatigue makes fools of us all.” You eat foods that if you weren’t tired you wouldn’t be. Your ‘will power’ muscle would be in full force. Your ‘justification muscle’ would also be working at full capacity so that you would not be making up excuses of why it is ok to eat that jelly doughnut.

Also when you are tired and not well rested your stress levels increase. When your stress increases, cortisol levels increase. When cortisol levels increase it is harder, if not impossible to lose weight. I speak about this is greater detail in other articles, which you can find at http://skinnyjeansceo.com

I beg you to get your sleep. It will make all the difference to you in your weight loss journey. So go to bed early. Sweet dreams!

How Many Is Too Many Calories?

Sunday, January 8th, 2012

Everyone ‘knows’ more or less what we need to do to lose weight and get healthy. We need to take in fewer calories than we expend of everything we do. When I say everything I mean everything. Everything includes anything from breathing, sleeping all the way up to doing your kickboxing class or racing in an Ironman. Did you know that lying down; perhaps while you’re watching TV, will give you a deficit of 90 calories in one hour? Now the moment you get up you start to burn even more calories. Now when you get up off the couch and decide to go for a run you can burn up to 800 calories in an hour. You body has this all figured out. You don’t have to do a thing!

So exactly what is too many calories? In order to lose weight, one lb to be exact, you need to decrease your caloric intake by 3500 calories. One pound of body weight =3500calories. Calories are a measurement of energy. That’s all it is. Your body needs a certain amount of energy to survive. The energy it gets is from food. Food is full of calories or in other words food is full of energy. Pending on the density of the calories is how much you need to eat of that particular food for a keratin amount of energy. For instance, let’s take nuts as an example. Not all nuts are created equal. Nuts have both fat and protein. Pistachios are much higher in fat than almonds. So if you are craving a nut go for the almond.

Let’s look at fruits. Here there is also a huge difference in calories or energy in a piece of food called a fruit. It’s not only because of the size but the amount of sugar or fructose it holds in its flesh. Grapes are very high in calories. Even within the fruit group there are subgroups. Melons are an example that all fruit within a subgroup are not created equal. Watermelon is very high in sugar and water. Cantaloupe has less sugar. Cantaloupe is a better choice of fruit if you want to lose weight.

The moral to this story is that you need to watch what you are doing for activity. As well, you need to watch the energy you are putting into your body. You can not fool your body. Everything you put into your body, your body knows. It is aware of your every move. You can do this and your body will help you get rid of that extra fat if you let it.

Weight Loss and Sleep Hygiene

Wednesday, January 4th, 2012

Do you need to have the proper sleep in order for you to have permanent weight loss? The answer is a resounding Yes! There are 3 very important ways you can get that appropriate sleep.

Here are 3 top tips to proper sleep hygiene for weight loss:

Don’t use an alarm clock. If your body and mind is completely rested it will spontaneously wake up. Practice for a week going to bed earlier and see what time naturally you wake up. This will show you how much sleep you need to be well rested. Trust in yourself, in your body, in your mind. By using an alarm clock you are relying on external forces. You can empower yourself my using your internal clock. If you have used an alarm click your entire life you may be scared to let yourself do what your body is capable of.

No screen time within 2 hours prior to bed. Yikes! This is a hard one. That means no TV, no computer, no video games. Why no screen time? The electromagnetic radiation that comes from the screen causes stress on the brain. This stress causes the brain to stay in hypersensitive mode. It takes about 1 hour to let your brain settle before it can shut off completely and be able to rest. I know in this day and age this is a tough one. If you do this you will be able to sleep quicker and get into REM sleep quicker.

Review your day before retiring. There are a number of reasons that this is helpful in relation to weight loss. Your mind reviews the day whether you are aware of it or not. If you consciously review your day then your mind doesn’t have to do it during the sleeping hours. If you re-examine what has happened throughout the day your mind will go into REM sleep, hence sleeping is more restorative.

These three tips are important. These may not be the easiest tasks in the world for you to do. By following these 3 tips of: no alarm clock, decreased screen time and reviewing your day, you will find that you will have more energy because you’re has had the proper amount of sleep. Now that you have more energy, you will make better decisions. When you make better decisions, about food and exercise, you WILL lose weight. When you make better decisions your confidence will increase. You will have greater hope for greater weight loss and health. I know this because it worked for me to lose 44 lbs in 12 weeks and you can do it too.

Is A Clean Eating Diet For You?

Saturday, December 24th, 2011

What does is it mean to be on a clean eating diet? Does it mean that we are only eating organic? Vegetarian? Vegan? Raw? There are many different ways of eating clean. Fast food, processed food, sugar and too much flour is not healthy for you. These have addicting substances in them. They also slow your body’s metabolism down. These two reasons are causing you to gain weight. 2/3 of North Americans are now considered overweight, obese and up to morbidly obese.

By eating clean, you eliminate anything processed. What you are eating is real food. In reality when you eat real food you don’t have to count calories. Junk food is out of the question. How can you tell whether you are eating clean? There is one main way and that is: how you feel.

Do an experiment. Take one day. Eat as healthy as you can, with as little as preservatives as possible. Stay away from packaged foods that do not need to be refrigerated. This is a huge clue that that particular so called ‘food’ is not part of a clean eating diet. See how you feel after only one day.

I know when I eat clean I feel light and energetic. My moods are more stable. I don’t feel down. I have increased feelings of hope and success. Plus I start to see the scale move in a downward progression – which is always a nice thing!

Not only are the foods important to a clean eating diet but it’s how you eat. Treat your food with respect. Have at least one meal per day that is mindful eating. That is where you are eating, sitting down by yourself or with friends and family and really think about what you are eating. It is not rushed nor hurried. You enjoy each spoonful, taking small bites rather than mouthfuls. This is not in front of the TV, the computer or even reading a book.

When on a clean eating diet, it isn’t looking in the fridge and eating out of the containers. It isn’t grazing throughout the day, having bites here and there, never reaching that feeling of fullness or perhaps not recognizing it.

A clean eating diet is a lifestyle. It is having a healthy relationship with your food. When doing a clean eating diet, it changes the way you look at the world. It can be fun and exciting.
