What Can I Really Do In Order To Lose Weight

Friday, October 14th, 2011

For many individuals it’s not always their own fault. Just when was the last time you had the opportunity to have a good meal cooked at your home? Men and women are most often to busy to be able to take a seat for a meal. As an alternative they grab something from a road side stand or perhaps a fast food joint and scarf it down on their way to work, or perhaps to a meeting.

Needless to say you could be in the other group that actually have the time to eat healthy but instead purchase all the unhealthy foods because it’s a lot easier. While others will simply have a big meal late at night and then hit the sack. When you take a look at your diet and when you eat you will notice that all these seemingly harmless things are leading to your unwanted weight issue. You’ve heard the phrase that breakfast is the most significant meal of every day? You will need your breakfast. You ought to get your metabolism running as soon as you can once you wake up, and having breakfast does that. When you eat breakfast your metabolism will start working as it now has food to be able to process. I’m also not really stating that you ought to have a huge breakfast. Merely something small such as a couple of eggs or perhaps a grapefruit. Nevertheless that is an important step if you’d like to lose weight.

Before leaving your house in the morning be sure to grab some healthy things which you’ll be able to snack on throughout the day. Come mid-morning many people head to the vending machine because they are starving. If you have healthy treats ready you will not be eating the junk from the snack machine. You’ll be able to snack throughout the day and still lose weight if your eating the right types of foods.

Make an attempt to pack a healthy lunch to take to work with you rather than going out to eat on a daily basis. This may shock you but healthy food choices doesn’t come from a drive up window. The same thing applies to your dinner, prepare something healthy and balanced.

Treatment Of Acne – Three Reasons To Think About the Acne And Diet Connection

Saturday, July 16th, 2011

Drug companies do not make their money researching the connection between acne and diet. That would not help them sell their products. Health professionals are under pressure from the drug companies to prescribe their products even though most of those products do not actually cure acne. In addition to that, dermatologists were taught that there was no real connection between acne and diet.

Over recent years, there has been enough scientific and anecdotal evidence to support the connection between acne and diet. Of course, not all of us who eat certain foods have acne breakouts but if you are predisposed to acne, some foods can aggravate it. The causes of acne are not simple and there is no easy cure, but eating some foods and avoiding others could still be one of the best acne remedies for you.

Compare The Cost

Food is cheaper than pharmaceuticals. Compare the cost of buying food against buying lotions, gels and creams. We are buying food anyway so it is part of our normal spending. We simply need to change the type of food we buy. Healthy food does not cost any more than unhealthy food. On the other hand, over-the-counter acne treatments and prescription drugs are an additional expense. In fact, sometimes they can be an unnecessary expense.

Using Pharmaceuticals Becomes a Habit

You need to keep using the over-the-counter and prescription treatments because they generally only treat the symptoms. This way they can become a habit. This is what the drug companies want, repeat sales. That is why their products are not designed to cure but only to relieve. Buying food is already a necessary habit. It is not a matter of choice; it is something we have to do.

The Simple Healthy Solution

The foods that can aggravate your acne are refined carbohydrates – white flour, white sugar, white rice and foods that contain these. These foods increase you blood sugar level, which causes an insulin surge that creates more hormones, which in turn makes more sebum (oil) and eventually, sets up an acne environment. We simply have to replace these foods with healthier ones – wholegrain bread; more fruit and vegetables. That’s why it is a simple solution.

A good guide is to buy and eat foods listed on the Glycemic Index (GI) with a rating of about 55 or under – low GI foods. Foods above that are the ones that break down into glucose quickly and cause a surge of insulin. The GI list is a long one with plenty of choices to replace your present diet with a healthier one.

The idea is to make your body healthier so your immune system is healthier and can deal with acne or any other ailment in a natural way. This way your body can heal itself the way Nature intended.

Children’s Birthday Parties and Healthy Diets

Wednesday, June 1st, 2011

Many people can cope with keeping themselves and their children on a healthy diet most of the time, but many parents wonder what to do about birthday parties. You want your child to have a nice party with their friends with tasty treat food. But most treat food is a dietary nightmare. What are you going to do?

One school of thought argues that you should relax the rules a bit – after all, a birthday doesn’t happen every day and if you’re eating healthily the rest of the time, one day of not-so-good food won’t be the end of the world. There’s something to be said for this point of view, as it does make for less stress for a parent, especially as kids’ parties take enough organising as it is. Another school of thought suggests that you should try to stick to your healthy eating plan, presenting healthy treat foods (they exist). If this sounds like something you’d like to try, or if you’d like to take the halfway option of having mostly healthy foods but with a few “baddies” thrown in, the following suggestions may come in handy:

Instead of:

Saveloys/cocktail sausages

Potato crisps/chips

Sweets

Regular ice cream

Bright coloured fizzy drink

Try this:

Grilled chicken wings or nibbles

Oven baked spicy potato wedges (easy enough for a 10-year-old to make)

Mixed nuts, salted or unsalted

Dried fruit (apricots, raisins, cranberries) and chocolate, preferably dark

Frozen yoghurt (ordinary yoghurt thrown into the freezer overnight will do)

Plain lemonade or mineral water mixed with fruit juice or chilled herbal tea (peppermint’s popular)

You can also try these healthy party foods:

raw vegetables and bread sticks dipped into hummus or guacamole

fruit kebabs in a chocolate fountain (dark chocolate, of course)

old-fashioned cubes of cheese stuck on a toothpick with a square of pineapple

mousetraps (slices of bread spread with Vegemite and a slice of cheese and popped under the grill; chutney or slices of tomato can substitute for the Vegemite)

garlic bread, preferably home made and/or wholemeal

cherry tomatoes

a salad of edible flowers – popular with little girls

It’s probably a good idea to make the cake yourself. You’ll probably want to ice it, which means food colouring and icing sugar (but you can get away with decorating a cake with plastic animals, if you have a good imagination, or with edible flowers). But at least you can control the sort of flour used and the ingredients that go into it (e.g. you can use rice bran oil instead of butter or margarine in the batter).

If you are throwing a party with a theme, you can try to include healthy foods that fit the theme. For a cowboy-themed party, baked beans fit in nicely (hot chilli and tabasco can be left off unless older boys want to take a dare). Edible flowers suit a princess or fairy theme, while an animal themed party can include foods that the animal would eat (e.g. carrots and apples for horses, meatballs made of mince for cats, dogs and tigers).

What Do You Really Get From Those Health Food Stores?

Monday, March 21st, 2011

To prolong the longevity of life is a goal of science and technology that is continuously worked on. The effort simply cannot stop at any point because the bottom line is, human beings like to live, and they like to live long. Whatever opportunity that can be added to the elixir of life should be taken advantage of and improved upon.

Recently, more people have really taken to heart the words, “Watch what you eat.Their belief is that with the right choice of food and a well made diet plan, one can expect to live a very long and fulfilled life. This is the reason why health food stores have experienced a boom in business. Although the products in these stores generally cost more than the items found in regular supermarkets and food shops, it is claimed that the initial amount spent is recouped through minimizing the need for doctor’s visits and prescription medicines.

Health Food

Just what can one expect to see inside these health food stores? The products carried in the shops are said to be healthier alternatives to the usual food items most people consume. Here is a list of goods that one can expect to find inside a health food store.

Herbs

Different kinds of herbs are abundant in these kinds of stores. They are quite popular because they can be added to regular food to augment flavor and, and of course, they provide some health benefits. In addition, taking herbal medicine is considered by many to be therapeutic.

Supplements

Health supplements are those that enhance the body’s performance by maximizing the nutrients taken from a person’s regular food consumption. These supplements are some of the bestsellers in health food stores.

Low-Calorie, Low Fat

Low-calorie alternatives to diet staples such as milk and meat are also figurative in the line of products sold by these shops. Soy products are among the popular substitutes for these items. The health-boosting qualities of soy make it a heavy-weight in the league of health foods.

Grains

Grains are integral to every health food diet plan, and health food stores carry a variety of grains to cater to this need. Shoppers can select their preferred grains whether in their natural form, or as ingredients in other goods like bread and cereal.

Good Junk Food

An assortment of health junk food can also be expected inside a health specialty shop. These items are still considered junk food, but are relatively less harmful than their counterparts.

Veggies

Of course, health food stores wouldn’t be complete without vegetables. Vegetables are some of the most important cornerstones of a proper and healthy diet.

Stop! Look! Listen!

However, customers of these health food stores should still exercise caution when buying their products. Just because they are labeled healthy doesn’t automatically mean they are, or they are appropriate to consume for a particular person. Here are some of the dangers one can encounter in health food stores.

“Prescription”

The objective of any business is to profit. One wouldn’t hear a sales clerk in these shops badmouthing the products. The goal is to sell, so it is natural for the employees of the store to build up an item to make a sale. However, some of the products may carry certain risks for some people.

For example, a person taking medication for an illness may react adversely to a particular vitamin. Without a doctor’s advice, people have to rely on the suggestion of the store clerks, who have no prescription powers. This is not to say that all health food stores will sell whatever to whomever just to turn a profit. This is just a reminder that it can happen, so there is a need to be informed and careful.

False Advertising

There have been cases where products were labeled health food but were actually not as beneficial as they were claimed to be. Simply looking like one and simply being located inside a store that supposedly sells healthy food does not make food healthy. One might not be getting what is needed from the items bought from the store. So, it is still important to check the labels. But more importantly, expert advice should be sought in order to ensure the best possible additions to one’s diet.
