The quest to lose weight takes up a good portion of the lives of many people. Some people try to figure out how to lose weight fast, while others take a more pedestrian approach, but the goal is usually the same. There are those that must lose weight to restore their health or avoid serious health consequences, while some just want to lose those last few pounds to fit into a favorite pair of pants. When you embark on a weight loss program and start to see results, you will also realize many psychological benefits. Sometimes, the psychological benefits of weight loss are even more important than the physical, as they enable further weight loss and can change your entire outlook on life.

Perhaps the most noticeable psychological benefit that many people will notice when they lose weight is an increase in confidence levels. Whether you lose weight fast or slowly, when you start to like what you see in the mirror each day, your confidence will improve. This can lead to greater success in your job, with your health and with the opposite sex. Having confidence creates energy around you that others will respond to favorably. Self-esteem is another benefit you’ll see when you lose weight that ties into confidence. So often when someone is overweight or obese, feelings of inadequacy are also part of the package. Of course, this isn’t actually true, but the feelings are there anyway, and losing weight can help take them away. Feeling good about yourself is important if you hope to succeed in any area of life.

Quite often, your overall sense of happiness and well-being will improve when you lose weight. You’ll notice a sense of balance, like you feel comfortable in your own skin when the excess weight is gone. Since exercise is also a part of any complete weight loss program, the feel good chemicals that are typically produced by exercising will also give you a psychological boost. By engaging in a weight loss program and succeeding, you’ll also realize a feeling of success that you may not have felt before. Basically, your life will be easier overall when you lose weight as you can shop for the same clothes as everyone else, move around easier and gain back much of the confidence you’ve lost.

If you’re in a position where you’ve received a high reading from a BMI calculator or you’ve put on a lot of weight, take the time to do something about it. You may not be able to lose weight fast, but you can still lose the weight. Don’t wait until you have type 2 diabetes or some other health condition. Get yourself on a sensible weight loss program or ask a professional for help. Anyone can lose weight and feel all the psychological benefits that go along with it if they’re truly committed.

How to Lose Weight Fast for a Vacation

Tuesday, February 7th, 2012

By Adrianna Noton

For many people, one of the main questions asked when it’s time for a vacation is how to lose weight fast. This is especially true when the vacation involves a beach and an ocean and wearing swimsuits. Once a vacation is booked, you may have a few weeks or a few months to drop some weight, and although it might not be possible to get the exact body you want by vacation time, you should be able to lose weight fast enough to make a difference. You probably won’t have time for a full-fledged weight loss program if you want to know how to lose weight fast, but you can still follow some basic tips and use some special strategies to help you move closer to your goal.

To lose weight fast for a vacation, you need to be committed and you need to be disciplined. Since you have a shorter window than normal to reach your goals, there won’t be any room for slip-ups or ‘falling off the wagon’. Try getting a picture of your vacation destination and sticking it on the door of your fridge. This will remind you that you’re trying to lose weight fast every time you go into the kitchen. If you aren’t a member of a gym, you may want to join one, even on a temporary basis. Also, enlist the help of a trainer from the gym, or a workout buddy to keep you motivated and focused. Increasing your lean muscle mass and burning calories through exercise will help your overall goal of losing weight fast for your trip.

Your diet will be the primary area where you’ll figure how to lose weight fast. To help yourself, clear out all the high fat and high sugar foods from your fridge and cupboards. Also lock up the liquor or give it away while you’re trying to lose weight fast. Alcohol has empty calories that will interfere with your goal. Once the stage has been set, go shopping for more natural, high fiber, low fat foods like fruits and vegetables, whole grains and lean meats. Visit a dietician if possible, to help create a menu that restricts your calories enough to make a difference. The dietician will know how to lose weight fast and still provide you with all the necessary nutrients you need. Make sure you eat regularly and don’t skip any meals as your vacation date approaches.

Once you have everything set up, it’s just a matter of following the program and being disciplined. Stick to your eating plan religiously and don’t miss any workouts. If you follow the proper protocol and restrict your calories sufficiently, you should be able to lose weight fast and at least get close to your preferred weight before the vacation. Obviously, losing a hundred pounds on short notice isn’t going to be possible, but if your goal is manageable and you leave yourself enough time there’s no logical reason why you can’t achieve it.

How to Know If You Need to Lose Weight

By Adrianna Noton

Sometimes, the need to lose weight is glaringly obvious, while other times it can be a little hard to tell. There is quite a range when it comes to “healthy weight” but certain signs can let you know that you need to drop a few pounds. If you do determine that you need to lose weight, don’t worry about how to lose weight fast. Set up a balanced weight loss program so you lose the weight in a healthy fashion and can keep it off. And remember, whether you want to lose weight fast or slowly, consistency is the key to any good weight loss program. Modify your eating habits and move your body, and you should end up seeing results.

One way to tell if you need to drop a few pounds is to punch your height and weight into a BMI calculator. BMI stands for body mass index, and it is a calculation that helps determine if you need to lose weight. A BMI calculator is a tool that’s typically found online that calculates your BMI for you. A body mass index of 18.5 or lower means you could stand to gain a few pounds.

If your BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9 you’re at your ideal weight, but 25 to 29.9 means you need to lose weight. If the BMI calculator tells you that your BMI is over 30, it means you are technically obese. The BMI calculator is an accurate way to tell if you need to lose weight in most instances. Sometimes, in the case of weight lifters and bodybuilders, you’ll get a BMI reading of obese, when that definitely isn’t the case. For most people, the BMI calculator will work just fine.

How your weight is distributed on your body is another way to tell if you could lose a few. The apple shape, where people carry more fat around the midsection, is considered to be more dangerous by health experts. Fat can accumulate around your internal organs and cause serious health issues. If you have an apple shaped body, you don’t necessarily have to lose weight fast to maintain your health, but you should start a weight loss program sooner rather than later. A waist size of over 40 inches in men or 35 inches in women is another indicator that you should lose weight for the good of your health.

If you have any health issues such as type 2 diabetes, it’s likely that losing some weight would help. Many cases of type 2 diabetes are caused by excess weight, and are resolved when the weight is lost. Aside from the BMI calculator, body shape and illnesses, how you feel overall also plays a role in whether or not you should lose weight. If you find that you’re often short of breath or have sore joints in your lower body, losing weight may help. Find a balanced weight loss program that includes both diet and exercise and you’ll be able to lose all the weight you need to.

There are many fad diets that say they can help you lose weight fast, instead trust the weight loss experts and shed those extra pounds naturally.

Foods to Eat When You Want to Lose Weight

By Adrianna Noton

When you decide to embark on a weight loss program, you’re likely to include both an exercise and diet element to reach your goals. You can try any number of different exercise routines to build more lean muscle and burn fat, but it is likely in the diet portion where you’ll notice the bulk of your results. The contemporary eating style of processed foods, high sugar, white flour and low fiber make it nearly impossible for many people to lose weight. Convenience foods and fast foods are virtually devoid of any nutritional value, and can pack on the extra pounds quickly.

If you switch to a more wholesome diet with more natural foods, you’ll probably notice your waistline begin to shrink and you may even be able to lose weight fast. When your new eating pattern is combined with regular exercise in your overall weight loss program, the results will be even more dramatic. You can find most of the foods you need to lose weight right in your grocery store.

Lean sources of protein are a must if your goal is to lose weight. Fatty cuts of meat will only add more saturated fat to your diet and make it impossible for you to lose weight fast, or at all. Choose leaner cuts of beef, chicken and turkey and cook them in a way that doesn’t add a lot of extra calories, such as grilling or broiling. Eggs are another low calorie source of lean protein that you can eat at any time of the day to enhance your weight loss program.

For a good source of lean, low calorie protein that contains a lot of fiber, beans are a good menu choice. Black beans, kidney beans, white beans, lentils, chickpeas and others will give you a jolt of protein and fiber. Fiber is crucial for proper bowel function, which in turn is crucial to lose weight fast or at a slower pace. You can eat beans in salads, soups or in wraps to add fiber to your diet. Fruit and vegetables also have a lot of fiber, plus the vitamins and other nutrients you need for optimum health. With fruits, try to eat the whole fruit rather than it’s juice, as you may notice spikes in your blood sugar that could hurt your weight loss program. Choosing whole grains for breads and wraps will help you to avoid white flour and bump up the fiber level even more.

Despite what some believe, fat is still an important part of your diet to lose weight and have optimum health. Foods like raw nuts, olive oil and avocados have healthy fats that will provide a great benefit to your weight loss program. One strategy when shopping at your grocery store is to stay more on the outskirts of the store and avoid the middle aisles, where most of the processed junk foods live. If you have access to a dietitian or nutritionist, take advantage of their expertise and base your diet to lose weight around their suggestions. Once you get your eating right, you’ll discover how easy it can be to lose weight fast.

Following the Glycemic Index to Lose Weight

Thursday, November 24th, 2011

By Adrianna Noton

Weight loss diets and fads are nothing new. As the population gets heavier, people are willing to try just about anything to lose weight. It’s common knowledge that being overweight is detrimental to your overall health, yet so many people seem to struggle when it comes to weight loss. Some people have success by following the glycemic index when choosing which foods to include in their daily diet. Several commercial diets base their programs on different elements of the glycemic index, and while results aren’t always perfect, it does provide certain weight loss benefits.

The glycemic index is a rating system that designates a numerical value to different foods based on how quickly they cause your blood sugar to rise after you eat them. The numbers range from 0 to 100, with pure glucose at 100 and all other foods based on that number. Foods that are higher on the glycemic index cause spikes in blood sugar and subsequent surges in insulin that can cause a host of different problems, including weight gain. These foods include white pastas and rice, soda pop, candies, cookies and other sweetened foods that are generally considered unhealthy. The body processes high glycemic foods quickly and the sugars enter your bloodstream faster, causing a surge of insulin shortly after they’re eaten.

Opinions vary on the validity of some of the commercial diets that follow the glycemic index, but by basing your diet even loosely on the numbers, you’re sure to boost your weight loss potential a few different ways. First, by choosing foods lower on the glycemic index, which are typically foods with a rating of 55 or less, you’re likely to include lower calorie choices like leafy greens, carrots, beans, whole grains and lean meats in your diet. Many of the foods that are lower on the glycemic index are also higher in fiber and contribute to weight loss by helping you to feel full for longer. And since your blood sugar will remain more stable throughout the day, you’ll avoid the spikes and drops that result in sugary junk food binges in the middle of the afternoon.

The key to losing weight by following the glycemic value of the foods you eat is to keep your fat content and overall calorie count in check each day. A fatty piece of hamburger covered in cheese won’t rate too highly on the glycemic index, but it will boost your saturated fat and cholesterol count for the day. Avoiding processed foods and making more natural choices with your diet will also help you avoid chemicals and hidden calories that can hinder your weight loss efforts. If you focus on whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables and lean sources of protein like eggs, chicken and beef, you should be able to make a dent in your weight loss goals. As part of an overall program with the exercise factor added in, you can lose weight consistently to reach your goals.

How to Calculate Your Body Mass Index

Friday, November 11th, 2011

Body mass index, also known as BMI, is a calculation to help determine whether or not you are overweight. The calculation takes into consideration your weight in relation to your height, and comes up with a number that is an accurate barometer as to whether or not you need to lose weight.

Many health websites are equipped with a BMI calculator that does the work for you. With a BMI calculator, all you have to do is enter your height and weight, and the tool pops out your final BMI reading. A body mass index of 18.5 or less means you are underweight. A healthy weight falls between 18.5 and 24.9, with the overweight category between 25 and 29.9. If you have a body mass index over 30, it means you are technically obese. Some people with BMI readings into the 30′s and 40′s may be eligible for weight loss surgery to help correct the problem before they suffer serious health consequences.

If you are unable to get to a website that has a BMI calculator, you can figure out your reading manually. All you need is a piece of paper, a pencil and a regular calculator. Using your imperial measurements, the calculation is as follows: Weight in lbs / (height in inches x height in inches) x 703. The metric calculation is as follows: Weight in kg / (height in meters x height in meters). As an example, for a 180 lb person who is 5’6, or 66 inches tall, the calculation would be 180 / (66 x 66) x 703, which equals a BMI of 29. For a metric reading, a person who is 65 kg and 1.7 meters tall would read 65 / (1.7 x 1.7) which equals a BMI of 22.5. Figuring out your BMI manually is accurate and will give you a true reading, but a BMI calculator is much more convenient if you’re able to find one.

In some cases, a BMI reading will suggest weight loss is necessary when it really is not. For people who train regularly with weights, their muscularity will add weight that the BMI calculator can’t differentiate from fat. If a weight lifter or bodybuilder is of average height, the BMI reading may suggest he is obese, when that definitely is not the case. On the other side, some older people who have lost quite a bit of muscle may get a BMI reading that is lower than their overall fat content would indicate. Weight loss may be a wise choice, but the BMI numbers won’t agree.

However, in the majority of cases, your BMI number is a true reflection of the state of your body composition. It is important for people with a high BMI to lose weight, as carrying added pounds is associated with health risks such as arthritis, heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes. Punch your height and weight into a BMI calculator online, or figure out your BMI manually to help gauge whether it is time to lose weight or if everything is just fine.
