How to Know If You Need to Lose Weight

Friday, January 27th, 2012

By Adrianna Noton

Sometimes, the need to lose weight is glaringly obvious, while other times it can be a little hard to tell. There is quite a range when it comes to “healthy weight” but certain signs can let you know that you need to drop a few pounds. If you do determine that you need to lose weight, don’t worry about how to lose weight fast. Set up a balanced weight loss program so you lose the weight in a healthy fashion and can keep it off. And remember, whether you want to lose weight fast or slowly, consistency is the key to any good weight loss program. Modify your eating habits and move your body, and you should end up seeing results.

One way to tell if you need to drop a few pounds is to punch your height and weight into a BMI calculator. BMI stands for body mass index, and it is a calculation that helps determine if you need to lose weight. A BMI calculator is a tool that’s typically found online that calculates your BMI for you. A body mass index of 18.5 or lower means you could stand to gain a few pounds.

If your BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9 you’re at your ideal weight, but 25 to 29.9 means you need to lose weight. If the BMI calculator tells you that your BMI is over 30, it means you are technically obese. The BMI calculator is an accurate way to tell if you need to lose weight in most instances. Sometimes, in the case of weight lifters and bodybuilders, you’ll get a BMI reading of obese, when that definitely isn’t the case. For most people, the BMI calculator will work just fine.

How your weight is distributed on your body is another way to tell if you could lose a few. The apple shape, where people carry more fat around the midsection, is considered to be more dangerous by health experts. Fat can accumulate around your internal organs and cause serious health issues. If you have an apple shaped body, you don’t necessarily have to lose weight fast to maintain your health, but you should start a weight loss program sooner rather than later. A waist size of over 40 inches in men or 35 inches in women is another indicator that you should lose weight for the good of your health.

If you have any health issues such as type 2 diabetes, it’s likely that losing some weight would help. Many cases of type 2 diabetes are caused by excess weight, and are resolved when the weight is lost. Aside from the BMI calculator, body shape and illnesses, how you feel overall also plays a role in whether or not you should lose weight. If you find that you’re often short of breath or have sore joints in your lower body, losing weight may help. Find a balanced weight loss program that includes both diet and exercise and you’ll be able to lose all the weight you need to.

There are many fad diets that say they can help you lose weight fast, instead trust the weight loss experts and shed those extra pounds naturally.

Foods to Eat When You Want to Lose Weight

By Adrianna Noton

When you decide to embark on a weight loss program, you’re likely to include both an exercise and diet element to reach your goals. You can try any number of different exercise routines to build more lean muscle and burn fat, but it is likely in the diet portion where you’ll notice the bulk of your results. The contemporary eating style of processed foods, high sugar, white flour and low fiber make it nearly impossible for many people to lose weight. Convenience foods and fast foods are virtually devoid of any nutritional value, and can pack on the extra pounds quickly.

If you switch to a more wholesome diet with more natural foods, you’ll probably notice your waistline begin to shrink and you may even be able to lose weight fast. When your new eating pattern is combined with regular exercise in your overall weight loss program, the results will be even more dramatic. You can find most of the foods you need to lose weight right in your grocery store.

Lean sources of protein are a must if your goal is to lose weight. Fatty cuts of meat will only add more saturated fat to your diet and make it impossible for you to lose weight fast, or at all. Choose leaner cuts of beef, chicken and turkey and cook them in a way that doesn’t add a lot of extra calories, such as grilling or broiling. Eggs are another low calorie source of lean protein that you can eat at any time of the day to enhance your weight loss program.

For a good source of lean, low calorie protein that contains a lot of fiber, beans are a good menu choice. Black beans, kidney beans, white beans, lentils, chickpeas and others will give you a jolt of protein and fiber. Fiber is crucial for proper bowel function, which in turn is crucial to lose weight fast or at a slower pace. You can eat beans in salads, soups or in wraps to add fiber to your diet. Fruit and vegetables also have a lot of fiber, plus the vitamins and other nutrients you need for optimum health. With fruits, try to eat the whole fruit rather than it’s juice, as you may notice spikes in your blood sugar that could hurt your weight loss program. Choosing whole grains for breads and wraps will help you to avoid white flour and bump up the fiber level even more.

Despite what some believe, fat is still an important part of your diet to lose weight and have optimum health. Foods like raw nuts, olive oil and avocados have healthy fats that will provide a great benefit to your weight loss program. One strategy when shopping at your grocery store is to stay more on the outskirts of the store and avoid the middle aisles, where most of the processed junk foods live. If you have access to a dietitian or nutritionist, take advantage of their expertise and base your diet to lose weight around their suggestions. Once you get your eating right, you’ll discover how easy it can be to lose weight fast.

There are many fad diets that say they can help you weight loss, instead trust the weight loss experts and shed those extra pounds naturally.

How To Know If We Need Chiropractic Treatment

Some body pains are caused by misalignment of the spine. These are soreness on the shoulder and arms, feet, hips and knees, migraines, tension headaches, pains on the legs, abdominal and chest pains, menstrual pains, etc. You may be wondering the relation of these pains to our vertebra. Well, it is because our spine directly and indirectly irritates the nerves in our body.

Chiropractic deals with this issue. A misaligned spine is characterized by subluxations or obstructions that cause the irritation of the nerves in our body and thus affect its functions. These obstructions minimize the body’s function to work properly. A chiropractor can help you to correct these obstructions in order to bring back bodily functions in their right state to work appropriately.

Have you ever thought why an elderly stoops? We have to find out the cause of the curving of the spine? Does it follow that when a person gets old, the spine will curve as well? Is there a thing like a healthy spine? How can one achieve it? Do you see yourself in that state where you will have to be bending, too for you just can no longer stand up straight?

There are various ways to determine if you or any member of your household needs the assistance of a chiropractor.

Imbalance movements: Start by turning your head slowly to the right then to the left. It will be better to have another person watch you when doing this activity. Observe. Is there fluidity in doing the turns? Do you experience rigidity? Alternatively, do you feel any restriction while turning your head from side to side? You can also do this on your lower and middle back.

Check your posture: We always do this. Remember when you were told to put books on top of your head and walk holding your head up high. The best way to do this is to have a full-length mirror. Is your head angled to one side? Check your shoulders. Are they leveled or the right is higher than the left? Move on to your hips. Are they even or uneven? Shoulders and hips must both be equal. It is a sure indication that you have spinal misalignment if one is higher than the other; hence, it requires a chiropractor’s expertise. The head, of course, must be in the middle and not angled.

Stressed muscles: If you feel some tightness on your neck and shoulder muscles, it means that you are having vertebral strain for quite some time. This tense muscles need to be loosened up.

Have a check on your shoes: If you notice that the heel part is worn out just on one side, it obviously says that you have an imbalance. You are not walking properly, which can be due to low back, knee, ankle or hip issues.

The above are simple ways to know if you need chiropractor care.

While selecting heat or ice therapy, you need to consider the following aspects:

* the kind of pain and injury

* the duration of the injury

* the purpose of the therapy

Additionally, other essential health issues can also influence if the management is appropriate or not.

The Kind of Pain and Injury.

These are subdivided into two categories: chronic and acute.

Injuries or pains that had just happened are classified as acute injuries and these commonly took placed in the past 72 hours. Furthermore, they are unexpected and are recognized for having an origin. Additionally, they are characterized to be inflamed, reddish and are sensitive to touch. These types of injuries and pain do not linger as they vanish right away.

On the other hand, injuries and pains that slowly progressed in time are chronic injuries and pains. Their origin is likewise difficult to tell. Most of these types of pain surfaced without any clue what triggered it. Compared to acute, chronic pains have lesser inflammation but are unrelenting and stay longer than acute pains.

Acute pains are better treated with ice therapy, specifically injuries that happened within the last 3 days. Consequently, inflammation accompanied by discoloration brought about by a new injury is better treated with ice therapy.

Advantage of Hot and Cold Therapy

Cold Therapy

* nerves that are in charge of sending the pain signals are desensitized

* produces a sedative to remove or diminish the pain

* muscle tremors brought about by acute injuries are alleviated

* diminishes the flow of blood and fluid that is in charge of hemorrhage

* puffiness and tenderness are likewise diminished

Heat Therapy

The Use of Heat or Cold Therapy.

The use of heat or cold therapy is not expensive, effortless, and gives effectual release for neck and back pains and other soreness. Whatever you choose will depend on the kind of pain that you have.

There are times when you need to use both. One good example is having chronic pain on your shoulder area accompanied by rigidity prior to exercising. An elderly can be convinced to see a chiropractor once he is made aware of the benefits he can get from the treatment.

Elderly are relieved of their pain.

One of the most efficient and harmless management for pain brought about by a problem in the vertebra is chiropractic care. I said efficient because a lot of vertebral disorders are related with spine abnormality and the neighboring soft tissues. Adept and trained to examine and treat any displacements in the spine, chiropractors can help the elderly with the insufferable pain that they have.

Increased range of motion of the spine and limbs

The increased range of motion of a person can positively affect their lives in many ways. Having an increased range of motion to some elderly could mean being able to lean down to lift up their grandchildren. For others, it means having no pain doing some gardening chores or having an additional 40 feet away from their driver on the golf course or track. In a lot of instances, an instantaneous increase in the range of movement normally follows chiropractic adjustments. This explains why most of the professional sports teams have a team chiropractor.

Improves Equilibrium and Synchronization

Balance and synchronization problems are common among the elderly because of cervical spine changes that cause its deterioration. Thus, we see irregular strides among the seniors and their feet becomes farther than the normal position. They also have a hard time getting up from a chair or going up and down the stairs. With the help of chiropractic treatment, the elderly will be able to regain their lost equilibrium and synchronization.

Joint Deterioration is reduced

A misaligned spine will be exhausted or damaged in advance. Therefore, to minimize its early deterioration, the spine must be checked regularly. By normalizing the alignment of the spine and decreasing stress, chiropractic care minimizes spinal deterioration and other lesions.

Health and Welfare is Maximized

More than just relieving the pain, chiropractic care helps the elderly to feel good and healthy as it helps them to perform the usual things they love to do.

The Occurrence of Falling is lessened

Senior citizens are prone to getting injuries from falling. Most Americans whose ages are above 65 had suffered from incidence of falling. About ninety percent of 850,000 bone breakages are brought about by falls as reported by the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention. By regularizing the cervical spine’s mechanoreceptors via manual manipulation, the danger of falling is minimized. Chiropractors also recommend exercise and stretching schemes to augment litheness, potency, maneuverability, equilibrium and synchronization.

Most of all, it helps the senior citizens to live on their own instead of living in a nursing home. Because chiropractic treatment brings back their health and wellness, they become more independent thus, regaining their self-confidence.

Senior citizens can indeed be happy in their age as they are relieved of their pains. Chiropractic care brings so much benefit to elderly people in a safe and efficient manner.

It is true that the primary treatment involved in chiropractic care is spinal manipulation. Other than that, which is not known to many people are other therapies that can help in the fast recovery of the patient.

Restorative or Therapeutic Exercises

These consist of exercises that will strengthen the neck, back and extremities of the patient. These activities encourage the joints to be healthy, minimize pain, discourage the weakening of the muscles, and augment steadiness, vigor and range of movement. It also protects you from any incoming or chronic damages.

Restorative or Therapeutic Stretches

To stop the scarring of the tissues, restorative stretches are prescribed. Having a regular stretching scheme is necessary even after the wound has healed. This will keep the flexibility of the tissues thus maximizing movability and safeguards you from incoming detriments.

The Traction

A lot of chiropractors use traction to sidetrack areas of your spine. It assists in releasing pressure in the disc as well as lessening pressure in the nerve roots.

The Soft Tissue Manual Therapy

Hands are used for this kind of therapy. This enhances the function of the soft tissues referring to the ligaments, tendons, muscles and joint capsules.

The Physical Therapy Modalities

There are 4 types of treatment for this type of therapy.

Muscle Motivation. Electrodes are placed on the skin to send out light electrical pulsations to definite spots of the body. Electrical stimulation comes in various types. A few relieves the pain or lessens the soreness. Some can treat muscle tremor better causing the muscles to contract and thus minimize the degeneration of the muscles. Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation or TENS. This small battery-operated movable muscle stimulation machine is perfect for home use. It controls the pain by using different amounts of electric current. Severe acute pain can be treated with this machine but not for chronic pain. Therapeutic Ultrasound. Deep heat therapy produced by sound waves is how therapeutic ultrasound works. Swelling, pain, rigidity and tremor are reduced while blood flow increases when this therapy is applied to the soft tissues. The Heat and Ice Therapy. Popularly known as hot and cold compress, this treatment has been used for quite some time in relieving pains. The cold or ice therapy relieves the swelling and soreness to manage the pain right after the injury. On the other hand, the heat or hot therapy calms the muscles, thus circulation increases and patients with chronic pain are given relief. There are times when both the heat and ice therapy are given to a patient depending on his situation.

Advice on Nutrition and Diet

It has been proven the food we eat plays an important role in our health. Thus, to achieve wellness, observing a well-balanced diet is essential. Part of the chiropractors’ training is on nutrition and diet. Thus, during the treatment and consultation, patients are advice a certain diet plan that is applicable to him only to achieve the goal of restoring his health and to lessen the danger of getting a serious illness.

Way of Life Psychotherapy

The way we lead our life has a great effect in our health. This consists of bad habits such as lack of exercise, drinking alcohol, smoking, eating the wrong kinds of food, stress and tension, improper lifting, lack of sleep, etc. and the lack of recreational activities are all factors to the deterioration of a person’s health.

This is the reason why seeing a chiropractor does not only involve checking you physically but it includes an open communication.

Chiropractic care is indeed holistic because it concerns everything. They are not just after giving you treatment; they are also concerned to give you back your health the way it was before.

A Brief Account of Chiropractic

Sunday, June 19th, 2011

I am no medical doctor or somebody who had medical background. However, I did work in a hospital for 8 years as an administrative secretary working closely with cardiologists. When I decided to leave the country, I became a medical transcriptionist, which broadened my knowledge in medical terminology. From that work, I learned more about the different diseases. Nevertheless, I have not heard of chiropractic at that time except orthopedics for musculoskeletal disorders.

It was when I worked in another country when I had my first encounter with chiropractic. It is a habit of mine to know about things so while undergoing the treatment, I searched on how chiropractic started and here is what I found out…

Chiropractic started in the latter part of 1800. Daniel David Palmer, a Canadian based in the USA, performed the first spinal adjustment. Palmer regarded as a self-learned teacher and healer treated his first patient, Harvey Lillard, a concierge in his own edifice. Almost unable to hear completely, Lillard confessed to Palmer that his hearing impairment started when he sensed a cracking sound on his upper back when he leaned over, which occurred a few years back.

This knowledge aroused the curiosity of Palmer, who at that time is a magnet therapy specialist. His being a magnet therapist made him knowledgeable in human anatomy as well as in the role of the spine in the body’s system. The case of Lillard made him think that the occurrences of the cracking sound and hearing impairment are relative to each other.

Suspecting that Lillard has a problem in his vertebra, he decided to check on the latter’s spine and proved his initial perception. With the consent of his concierge, he manipulated Lillard’s spine and to their amazement, the hearing problem was reinstated. This is where chiropractic started, which is now termed as chiropractic adjustment or chiropractic manipulation.

From the treatment he extended to Lillard, Palmer realized that manipulation of the spine leads to the relief of pain and other symptoms of disease. Thus, the word chiropractic subluxations came into light, which refers to problems with the spine.

With that realization, Palmer started treating various diseases that includes migraines, sciatica, epilepsy, stomach pains and even heart problems via manual manipulations. He started to teach and share his knowledge in chiropractic methods and techniques in his school, Palmer School and Infirmary of Chiropractic, which he opened in 1898 in Davenport, Iowa.

His manner of treatment was completely ignored and scoffed at by medical practitioners and calling him a quack doctor. He was even sent to jail for not possessing a medical license.

It may be true that his teachings may not be presentable as per the 21st century techniques is concerned; nevertheless his notes showed that at the start of the 20th century, he is updated in his understanding and information. This they found out when a search was conducted in his library.

Most modern chiropractors came from the European countries. In fact, my chiropractor is Danish. Others came from the different states of America, Australia, New Zealand and the provinces of Canada. All of these are licensed professionals in the field of chiropractic care. My further research led me to a count of over 50,000 committed chiropractors in the US. More and more chiropractic educational courses are offered outside North America although it was here that chiropractic started. To date, chiropractic is gaining popularity brought about by its good effects to patients although educating people to its benefits is still underway.

If we are to check in history, the relation of wellness and health to the spine even happened a long time ago during the time of the great medical philosopher, Hippocrates. In one of his famous lines and I quote “Get knowledge of the spine, for this is the requisite for many diseases.” Expounding on his statement, even a non-medical person can get and understand what he means – the root cause of curing any illness is through the spine. If I remember it right from my biology class, we need to take care of the spine because it is a part of our central nervous system apart from our brain.
