A lot of people experience a pain in their thumb joint on a regular basis. Although this can be a prevalent injury, most people are unfamiliar with what is causing this pain. Listed below are four common factors behind thumb joint pain:

1. Daily Use

This is often one cause of joint pain that may merely be unavoidable. The thumb is used for pretty much every activity that individuals can get involved with. This consists of lifting items, driving, typing, writing, cooking, and so forth. The list may go on and on. Depending on your profession or how busy you are, merely typical daily use of your thumbs could cause regular joint pain. Although this may not be avoidable it is one thing to know.

2. Straining The Joint

A strain may be considered as just using the joint excessively. Lifting and grasping something very heavy is one situation where you can strain your thumb joint. A sprain is comparable to a strain and may be caused by jamming your thumb. This can aggravate the tendons, muscle tissues, and nerves in the joint so that whenever you use it you’ll feel some pain.

3. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

This condition is brought on by making use of your hands in a repetitive motion. Regrettably, this condition is starting to become increasingly more typical. Part of the basis for this is that everybody is typing on a keyboard more than earlier decades or generations. With Carpal Tunnel Syndrome the nerves involving the bones and joints are squeezed, which causes pain. This condition can be dealt with with medication and the most severe cases can be helped by surgical procedures.

Today, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is frequently a result of typing on a keyboard. Consequently, it’s always best to study about keyboards and desks that will give you the best angles for your wrists along with other joints. There are devices that may be utilized to alleviate the strain on the joints making sure that Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is less likely to develop.

4. Arthritis

Generally, arthritis affects older people because this ailment takes time to develop. Arthritis is the degradation of the cartilage between the bones. Cartilage cushions the bones, so with no cartilage the bones may mash together and cause pain. Although aging is normal with arthritis, too much use or a deficiency of calcium may result in this disorder.

Even though it might not be doable to fully prevent all of the potential reasons behind thumb joint pain, it’s good to recognize what are probable causes. By understanding what may cause this pain, you might be able to steer clear of some pain down the road.

As the clock ticks on, so does your body’s biological clock. Although no one knows what our expiration date is, with these tips you can increase your odds of stopping the three time bombs in your body and allow your time line to be long and strong!

1. Your heart, the beating time bomb.

I’ll bet that if I were to ask you the four main things you need to do to prevent a heart attack you could spout them out lickity-split. If I were to ask you how many of them do you adhere to in your daily routine you would tell me all of them, right?

So how come 4109 of us have a heart attack every day? Yep, 1.5 million people have heart attacks every year in the US. Half a million die. But how can that be? Have you seen all the people running, swimming, biking or walking? Twelve hours a day there are countless infommercials selling all the latest gadgets for staying super fit. We should be a nation of supermen/women wearing a huge “S” on our red shirts. But, alas we are not: for those twelve hours a day we are being sold gadgets that make everything easier including 800 numbers to call for easy help, and websites that deliver everything right to your door, we are given the message that losing weight is easy. At this rate somebody will come up with a way where you don’t even have to go to the door to pick up what was delivered! Sheesh!

Avoidance tactics are; a sensible diet with low amounts of fats and cholesterol. This may not be easy but it’s a lot easier than undergoing surgery, so think about that next time you reach for your 2nd helping.

A daily exercise program that burns the fats and cholesterol and will lower your blood pressure. Some people are even able to get off their blood pressure medications when they exercise and lose weight. You should be under a doctors care and ask your doctors advice before going off any medication.

Keeping your stress under control (exercise helps). Exercise actually lowers your stress hormones and is as effective as medication for mild depression. The benefit? Exercise doesn’t hurt your liver.

And getting a good night’s sleep (exercise helps).

These are simple rules to live by and a far cry from trying to diffuse a bomb like they do in the movies where you have to figure out whether to cut the blue wire or the red wire. Tick, tick, tick, tick. You are the detonator or the bomb squad to the rescue. The choice is yours.

2. Your Lungs

If you smoke cigarettes you might just as well roller-skate behind a city bus every day and get it over with in a hurry. Talk about a time bomb. You are literally lighting the fuse every time you fire one up. I know this may not be politically correct to say that, but I’d rather tell it like it is than see you gasping for air hooked up to tubes waiting to die choking on every breath. If this sounds a little harsh, it’s not as harsh as dealing with smoke related diseases. When you inhale smoke, it smothers and kills the microscopic tissues that make up the tiny air sacs in your lungs. When you sleep, some get repaired, others don’t. Years of smoking kills these little sacs faster than they can heal and repair themselves. That’s why people who quit can recover and lead longer healthier lives. Also people who exercise have better oxygen saturation. Why? Because stronger muscles require less oxygen.

Since I’ve never known anyone who enjoys gasping for air after climbing stairs, or having weak muscles, low bone density, burned clothes and furniture or smelling like an ashtray wherever you go, I can’t imagine that this would be anyone’s legacy in life. When you do quit, you’ll smell how offensive the smoke is and you’ll also have a better sense of smell for all the wonderful things in life – fresh flowers or ocean air. Air is still free so make the most of it and use all you can. The human body is made to absorb air because the trillions of tiny cells that make up the human body need and use air as much as you need to breathe to stay alive. If you poison the air they breathe, they die. As they die, you become weaker and sick. It’s that simple. Every time you put out a cigarette, you’ve quit. Make this one the last one and then go outside for a breath of fresh air.

3. Joints are for Moving

Here’s a surprising statistic, every 8 and a half seconds, someone in the US turns 50. That’s right! That translates to 76 million people today…and that number is growing. Of that 76 million, 46 million, that’s more than half, will suffer from painful joints. It may be you, it may be a friend, or it may be someone you love.

For many years doctors thought that exercising with arthritis would damage your joints. Fortunately, doctors are now aware that therapeutic exercise is vital to reducing and eliminating joint pain.

Therapeutic exercise has been medically proven to relieve and correct joint pain and that’s why insurance companies pay for expert treatment to stabilize weakened muscles and improve range of motion. By incorporating regular, targeted therapeutic exercise you can relieve joint pain and ease muscle tension. So what type of therapeutic exercise? Exercises that include flexibility and muscle strengthening provided by a licensed Physical or Occupational Therapy are best. Just as a nurse has specialized training in pharmacology, therapists have years of intense training in therapeutic exercise, physiology and kinesiology, which is the study of human movement.

Americans are getting older every minute and life expectancy is ever-increasing. People leading full productive lives after the age of retirement are no longer a “wow.” Most baby boomers want to live active lives and learn how to enjoy a fulfilling healthy life. Yet the cost of healthcare as we age continues to escalate, leaving little remaining for vacations or other luxury items. So what do you do if you want to life a life without giving your retirement account over to medical expenses?

According to the Employee Benefit Research Institute a man who retires at 65 can expect to live until 83. He will need to have around $65k to $109k in those years to cover insurance premiums and out of pocket expenses. That works out to $270 to $450 a month.

For women, the EBRI says retiring at 65 and living until 85 will mean she’ll need $88k to $146k for insurance premiums and out of pocket expenses which works out to $366 to $608 a month. Both men and women will need these amounts on hand to provide a 50% chance of having enough to cover these expenses. If you’re getting $1000 a month from Social Security these costs will eat up about 25% to 60% of those payments alone.

If you have managed to secure a considerable nest egg, good for you. If you haven’t, it might be time get some part time work. Besides, retirement is boring. You know, all that rest and relaxation gets old pretty quick.

Here’s a novel idea that can save you money on healthcare costs. According to the National Foundation for anti-aging, “most aging is premature.” Poor posture, low energy, brittle bones are not aging, but a disease. Sitting around, also known as the Disuse Syndrome causes weakness, frailness and aging at a much faster rate. You can stay out of the health care merry-go-round much better with some good habits. And just how do you do that? Start an exercise program geared towards your needs, abilities or limitations. That means if you have limited mobility, seek seated exercise programs. If your knees are gone, ride a bike or do some gentle exercise programs. If you have asthma, don’t take up hiking in the mountains. Start slow and take walks around the neighborhood. It’s important to find something you enjoy because you’re more likely to do it. The more you do it the healthier you get. If you have arthritis, do an exercise program especially for arthritis and limber up your joints and muscles.

You needn’t strive to be an athlete. If you are just getting started, exercise will make you healthier. You’ll have stronger muscles to lift things, denser bones to absorb shock from falls and a stronger heart to pump more blood and oxygen to all the organs in your body which makes them all work better. Pills, sometimes necessary, are not always an easy fix and can cause many undesirable side effects and mask the symptoms. Exerise can get to the root of the problem and eliminate the cause. There are countless examples of people who were taking a dozen pills a day that went down to 2, 3 or none a day because of regular exercise.

The healthier you are, the less likely it is you will have to employ the skills and costs of doctors, nurses, physical or occupational therapists and pharmacists for whatever ails you. They worked long and hard to acquire those skills and they can’t afford to work cheap. You worked long and hard for your retirement and you can’t afford to lose it all to twinkies and watching TV. Plan for your health now instead of being a patient for your health care plan.

What to expect now that you’ve gotten older. It’s not that bad, really.

It’s harder to work off that spare tire, men, you’re hair thins and then falls out, muscles weaken from disuse, vision becomes blurred, hearing is diminished, balance is off center, bones thin, joints become arthritic and your skin gets wrinkles. Whew! I think I’ll just go back to bed.

Now not so fast. All is not lost, at least not yet. There is nothing we can do about getting older, but there is plenty you can do about aging. Getting older doesn’t mean we can’t age without kicking and screaming the whole way.

Here’s what I propose you get yourself used to. Exercise, any kind of exercise, each and every day. Now I know what you’re thinking. But I’ve never exercised a day in my life, why start now? Go look in the mirror. Compare that image to the old photo of you at the beach 20 years ago. Yeah, I know. This is only supposed to happen to other people. Sorry, it’s happened to you.

Exercise and proper skin care can significantly reduce and slow the aging process inside and out. Let’s take a look under the microscope to see what’s going on inside you and everybody else that’s getting older.

You’ve got chromosomes with genes in them. On the ends of these gene strands are what’s called telomeres (DNA). These little telomeres act just like those plastic wraps, or caps, around the ends of your shoelaces. As we age the telomeres deteriorate and the shoelaces (chromosomes) begins to fray and come apart as they continually replicate themselves.

During cell division, enzymes that duplicate the chromosome and its DNA cannot continue their duplication all the way to the end of the chromosome. If cells divided without telomeres, they would lose the ends of their chromosomes, and the necessary information they contain. The telomeres are disposable buffers blocking the ends of the chromosomes and are consumed during cell division and replenished by an enzyme called telomerase. When this happens some of the DNA is lost and genes deteriorate which promotes the symptoms of aging.

There is no know way to reverse this process but there are many ways to fight it. Five small meals a day instead of three big ones. If you’re not a construction worker, don’t eat like one. Keep it light and low cal. Perform weight bearing exercises, start light and work your way up to heavier loads. No matter what your age is your muscles will respond to lifting weights, period. Exercising helps your body maintain it’s hormonal balance. All the hormones flowing through your blood increase and help your organs operate to their best ability. It’s like putting high test gas in your bloodstream; you’ll run like a top.

Thirty minutes a day of exercise is enough to get your hormones pumping. It’s also very important to stretch after exercise of any type. Keeping the range of motion in all your joints are what help you keep doing the things you love most. Applying skin care products to your face and body will keep your skin smooth and clear. This is good advice for men too.

All this sounds like a bunch of extra work but the payoff at the end of the day is you’ll sleep like a baby. Say goodbye to insomnia and any other sleep disorders you may have. Want to know why? Because you’re going to be pooped! But you’ll wake up with more energy, a younger body and a sharper mind. That’s something that no pill on earth can offer.

You can have a younger fitter body with doctor recommended, award winning Suzanne Andrews doctor recommended Functional Fitness DVD’s .

Inflammation is a natural response by the body when some foreign virus, germ or bacteria enters. It tries to expel or kill the invader by raising temperature or creating inflammation so that more blood reaches the site carrying along the killer cells to handle the foreigners. Once the problem is resolved, inflammation goes away.

But for many, inflammation becomes chronic. But instead of reaching for an NSAID, the first consideration should be to look at what may be causing the inflammation. Once the cause is addressed, inflammation disappears.

Many lifestyle factors can lead to pain. But often food is the cause. Whether through allergies or simply from the many chemical ingredients that have been added to today’s highly processed foods, it’s necessary to find and eliminate those unhealthy foods that create pain. Often just switching the diet to organic, low carbohydrate foods solve the problem and pain doesn’t return.

But what can you do to relieve pain once you have it? What can you take that’s natural without the side effects of those drugs you automatically reach for?

Cherries and Berries
They’re loaded with anthocyanins, a group of antioxidants. Antioxidants prevent the proliferation of free radicals that damage the major organs of the body and lead to inflammation. The flavonoids in fruit have anti-inflammatory properties. They are natural pain relievers that help heal swollen and painful joints. Blueberries, blackberries, respberries, strawberries and cherries top the list of anti- arthritis fruits.

Cold Water Fish
Wild salmon, sardines, mackerel, scallops and anchovies help halt pain. Fish comes loaded with omega-3 essential oils. Unfortunately fish is not a part of many diets, but should be. The imbalance between omega-3 and omega-6 is partly responsible for inflammation that creates those painful joints and frequent flareups. Eating more fish helps speed healing and produces new cartilage.

Flaxseed to Reduce Pain
They’re small but come packed with alpha-linoleic acid (ALA) and is the best plant source for omega-3 oils. It makes a good substitute for those who aren’t fond of fish. Two tablespoons of ground flaxseed gives you up to 140% of the daily requirement of omega-3. They can be incorporated into breakfast cereals, salads and mixed with fruits in a parfait. Flaxseed should be ground so the hard outer shell is broken. It makes for better absorption of the omega-3 oils. Chia seed also contains ALA and helps fight inflammation.

Yogurt
It makes a great dessert as it can be mixed with berries and flaxseed for extra pain fighting power. The friendly bacterial cultures in yogurt have curative effects. They add the necessary micro flora in the stomach that helps for better digestion and absorption of the nutrients in food. Yogurt helps to strengthen the immune system.

Brazil Nuts
It’s the selenium in the Brazil nuts that help fight inflammation. Those who suffer from arthritis have extremely low levels of selenium. And low levels of this mineral invites damage to the joints. Selenium rich foods help fight free radicals that damage the major organs of the body and promote faster aging.

These five foods are helpful in fighting arthritis pain, or any pain and do it naturally without side effects. Except for fish, they can be combined to create an antioxidant rich desert that can supplant the usual fat and salty snacks that most people have become accustomed to. Those same snacks are responsible for creating inflammation in the body.
