Each and every habit has its own pathway. If you do something different your brain – the neurons and synapses, gets all out of whack because it cannot follow the wiring in the brain. It does not follow the paths of the synapses. Neurons no longer know what to do. That is why you get a different feeling than you are used to because there is no physical wiring in the brain to follow. You feel unaccustomed to it. It’s uncomfortable because that’s not the way your brain is wired. It literally is wired like that. You can see it on a brain scan. You can make new synapse connections though. At first new actions or tasks may feel peculiar because there is no pathway. The more often you do something which is not your habit you will begin to build those pathways. You will then become more comfortable with your new habit because you have built new pathways.

For instance, it you always eat at 3pm and you decide you no longer want to do it. It will feel very strange and uncomfortable at the beginning because this is not your habit. This is not part of your wiring in your brain. The more often you don’t eat at 3 pm the easier it will become because you are building new pathways for that new habit. If you do not use a pathway it will shrivel and die and makes room for the new synapse. Hence, you get a great new habit! Keep it up!
