<p>We have no time for the gym, but we do not want to gain weight, what is the alternative? Artificial sweeteners of course! They put in our sodas, we put it in our coffee, we put it in our recipes and in our water; but are we accomplishing our goal, or are we totally missing our mark?</p>
<p>We find High-Fructose Corn Syrup in many of the products we use daily such as tomato sauce, salad dressings and others. TV advertising tells us that our bodies don&#8217;t know the difference between corn syrup and cane sugar.</p>
<p>They tell us that sugar is sugar and though that might be true, what about processed sugars that have had some of their glucose converted into fructose to produce a desired level of sweetness, but because of its processing, some brands of High-Fructose Corn Syrup may contain mercury, a known neurotoxin.</p>
<p>Many studies have shown that artificial sweeteners and Mono-sodium Glutamate suppress the feeling of being full thereby causing us to overeat. We know that scientists experiment on rats and that when an item is tested on them, as with High-Fructose Corn Syrup, they developed a fatty liver disease and type 2 diabetes, while those on a fructose-free diet did not.</p>
<p>Other studies suggest that High-Fructose Corn Syrup directly causes obesity. When the reaction in lab rats is a negative, then should take pause and reconsider our options.</p>
<p>According to Dr. David Williams: &#8220;There is no &#8216;maybe&#8217; about the connection between sugar and heart disease. I can&#8217;t put it more plainly: sugar kills.&#8221; (Alternatives, June 2010).</p>

<p>A 44-pound (20-Kg.) child would only have to consume 400 mg, about the equivalent of three diet sodas per day to reach the carcinogenic 20 mg/kg body weight dose. Parents, do not give your children &#8220;diet&#8221; anything at all!</p>

<p>The HCG diet is the easiest diet for fast weight loss. There is no proof that losing weight slowly is any better than losing weight quickly. In fact, some authors believe that dieters that lose weight quickly are more successful. Many studies have been done on very low calorie diets (VLCD&#8217;s). Nearly all of them show that fast weight loss is NOT associated with any significant medical problems. Some studies show better long term results with VLCD&#8217;s while others do not. Almost all are associated with rapid improvement in cholesterol, triglycerides and blood sugar.</p>
<p>Since safety is NOT an issue, its all a matter of personal choice. Many people I see become very encouraged when they have rapid weight loss-they fit into clothes they have not been able to wear for years, and spouses and friends become very encouraging.</p>
<p>LOSE WEIGHT OR NOT LOSE WEIGHT?</p>
<p>It depends not only on you weight and height, but on how much of the fat is around your abdomen and if you have any other metabolic problems. Fat around and inside the abdomen causes serious medical problems.</p>
<p>OBESITY OR OVERWEIGHT? WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES</p>
<p>The first issue is the definition of obesity. Although I tell my patients that their ideal weight is the weight they feel comfortable with and the weight they can maintain without feeling anxious or deprived, everyone wants a number. We need to be careful here, because &#8220;ideal weight&#8221; based on fashion trends, celebrities&#8217; physical appearance, or an idealistic body image rarely reflects healthy weight.</p>
<p>ARE YOU AT RISK FROM YOUR WEIGHT?</p>
<p>Your Body Mass Index: Overweight &gt; 25, Obese 30 or &gt;. The ratio of body weight to height is called the body mass index (BMI), and reflects the total fat as related to one&#8217;s height. Studies reported in Science in October 2008 suggest fat cells can even make more fat cells.</p>
<p>Clumped together, the fat cells just below the skin of the abdomen-surrounding all of the vital organs-are no larger than a bar of soap, but are the cause of all obesity-related medical problems. Since measuring the inner fat is difficult and expensive, researchers use the circumference of the waist as a good proxy since it correlates with the critical amount of inner fat responsible for the development of all of the complications related to obesity.</p>
<p>You Are At Risk if: Men waist: 40 inches or greater, Women- waist: 35 inches or greater</p>
<p>Risk factors and heart disease:</p>
<p>The presence of risk factors related to heart disease must be considered when you are evaluating whether or not you need to lose weight. If you have three or more of the conditions listed below, you are at high risk for cardiac problems. Moreover, if you also have a high BMI or a large waist circumference, you are considered to have metabolic syndrome. Here is a March 2009 update on risk factors from the American Heart Association:</p>
<p>1. Age: males older than 45 years and females older than 55 years</p>
<p>2. Family history of heart disease</p>
<p>3. Cigarette smoking</p>
<p>4. High blood pressure</p>
<p>5. Elevated LDL cholesterol</p>
<p>&#8220;Burn&#8221; the fat- reduce the problems: The good news is that when one is losing weight, the fat deposited inside the abdomen is the first to be used and burned for fuel. However, the only way to start this process is by reducing the food intake or significantly increasing the amount of exercise (we are talking about daily hours of real working out in the gym) in order to create a calorie deficit. The decrease of just an inch or two in waist circumference corresponds to a relatively large reduction of fat in the abdomen, and consequently significantly reduces health complications caused by obesity.</p>

<p>If you are overweight, don&#8217;t think &#8220;I need to go on a diet&#8221;, instead think &#8220;I need a new lifestyle&#8221;.</p>
<p>When you finally decide you need to lose the weight, don&#8217;t start a diet as an immediate solution to a problem, like having to buy a larger size dress instead of one two sizes smaller than you are; or your belt is too small and you have to buy a larger one, not a good sign. In men, an increase in waistline can mean your heart may be feeling the pressure of that extra fat around your waist.</p>
<p>Time to make some changes; but these changes cannot or should not be made to solve a temporary obstacle. You must decide to change your life-style rather than going on a diet. You know that what you have been doing so far does not work, so perhaps it&#8217;s time to try something different.</p>
<p>Don&#8217;t be impatient to lose those unwanted pounds, allow yourself enough time to lose them safely. Remember, you did not gain the weight overnight and you cannot expect your body to drop those pounds overnight.</p>
<p>By now you have realized that all those diets you have been on, just do not work! Time for a different approach. Time for a life-style change.</p>
<p>Think long-term results. Start by finding out what your caloric intake should be, based on your sex, height, age and physical activity. <p>Here we are, not quite the way we would like to be, but all of a sudden we find ourselves overweight, perhaps with secondary effects due to the extra weight, not quite sure what to do next, which diet to start and wondering how we got here.</p>
<p>The answer probably lies in the kind of foods we have been consuming for most of our lives and since we live in a country of plenty, what we consume comes in portions that could feed two people at once, but because it&#8217;s in front of us, we feel compelled to eat it all by ourselves.</p>
<p>Our cups have gone from eight ounces to 32 ounces; our dishes have grown from 12 inches to 14 inches or more. A hamburger has gone from one patty to up to four patties, plus lettuce, tomatoes, onions, mayo, ketchup, cheese AND bread, but what is most striking, is watching some people stuffing all of the above in one bite! Did you ever hear the saying &#8220;We Eat to Live, We don&#8217;t Live to Eat&#8221; although to see ourselves eating, we could fool anyone.</p>
<p>Have you ever wondered what your blood density would look like after ingesting something like that? Have you wondered what all that fat does to our arteries? To our poor hearts? Is it a wonder that every 34 seconds a person in the US dies of heart problems, and every 20 seconds a person in the US has a heart attack. I could continue to give you endless statistics, but you get what I am trying to show you.</p>
<p>Time for a curtain call! If what we have done so far has not worked, then it&#8217;s time for a change of venue. We need to start by charting ourselves a plan:</p>
<p>No more fast food, saturated fats, excessive salt, processed meats! Do you consider that a punishment? Think positive, think of you as turning the corner into great health!</p>
<p>Neal Barnard, MD, President, Physician&#8217;s Committee for Responsible Medicine, Washington, DC and author of Eat Right, Live Longer suggests that &#8220;total vegetarian diets are best at successfully modifying eating habits in a way that produces lasting results&#8221;.</p>

These two things go hand in hand. I started down this road many years ago and it as been well worth the journey. There was not a great deal of information on healthy food habits but results of studies were starting to emerge.</p>
<p>Even then there were some basics that appeared to be risks to long-term good health. These were high consumption of saturated fats, sugar and salt and low consumption of fresh fruit, vegetables and whole grains and lack of exercise. The information available also pointed to a lack of nutrients such as minerals and vitamins because our food was over-processed.</p>
<p>Here are some healthy eating habits I have formed over the years that have helped me <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.weightloss.herestheblog.com/goto/control_weight/17907/2">control weight</a> and to be healthy:</p>
<p>1. I eat a good breakfast. I wake up hungry and if I have exercised that morning I am looking to replace some energy and fuel-up for the day. If I have cereal it will be oats, wheat biscuits or natural, unsweetened muesli. I eat several pieces of fresh fruit and a handful of walnuts. I do like eggs and have them boiled or fried in olive oil. These days I have a small piece of lean meat two or three mornings a week. I have green tea with breakfast.</p>
<p>2. Mid-morning I have a cup of green tea as a pick-up and may have a plain cookie.</p>
<p>3. Lunch might sound very boring, but I will generally have a whole grain sandwich with healthy fillings &#8211; tuna, salad, lamb or beef with a piece of fruit to finish. I will often have a coffee with a work mate, without sugar and a touch of milk. Generally, that is the only coffee I have of a day.</p>
<p>4. Normally I do not eat in the afternoon, unless I feel my energy is running down. A cup of green tea usually fixes that. I will sometimes have a handful of nuts or a piece of dark chocolate to give me a lift.</p>
<p>5. Dinner has always been our main meal. I do not eat big meals, but I eat several servings of vegetables &#8211; not white potatoes. When I have pasta I usually have salmon, bolognaise or arabiata sauce and try to keep away from the cream sauces. Generally, my only drink of an evening is a glass of red wine with my meal. I do like dessert but limit the amount I have. If I really feel like something sweet I will have a small piece of dark chocolate &#8211; it is low GI and a good antioxidant. Which means I do not have to feel guilty.</p>
<p>I do not suggest this is the definitive eating plan as there are many variations you could make in the place of what I do. In fact, I vary it a lot more than this. But the point is, I have thought about the food I eat and I do have a plan that suits me and keeps me healthy.
